Safety of Neti Pot

Many people who suffer from colds, congestion or allergies rely on neti pots to keep their nasal passages clear. Neti pots are safe if you follow the instructions on how to mix and use the cleansing solution.

Features

A neti pot resembles a small teapot with a long spout. You can find neti pots at drugstores or stores that sell alternative remedies.

Benefits

Dr. Bradley Marple of the American Academy of Otolaryngology says irrigating the nasal passages with a device like the neti pot is a safe, effective way to relieve sinus problems.

Usage

Follow the instructions on how to use the neti pot. Tilt your head over a sink or basin and allow some of the solution to flow into the top nostril. The solution will flow out the other nostril. Repeat on the other side.

Solution

You can make your own solution by dissolving 1/8 teaspoon of table salt in a cup of water. Distilled or purified water is best because it is free of chlorine or other impurities. If you use tap water, be sure to boil it first and add the salt after the water cools.

Warning

If you are using the neti pot properly and your congestion or other nasal problems don't go away, see your doctor.
