Natural Cures Using Cherry Juice for Gout

Gout is a painful medical condition that usually affects the feet and toes, causing them to swell and burn. The onset can occur suddenly and can be debilitating. Gout is a complicated condition and doesn't discriminate as to who it affects, though men seem to get these attacks more often than women. While there are prescription medical treatments, natural ones can work just as well. Cherry juice in particular is a common remedy.

The Effects of Cherry Juice

    If you experience gout, cherry juice can be a blessing. This liquid made from the dark red cherry packs a bountiful supply of vitamins and minerals, as well as flavonoids, antioxidants and anthocyanins. These qualities combine to make cherry juice an excellent treatment for relieving the pain caused by gout.

    Anthocyanins are the pigments that cause the berry's deep red color, but, more important, they have anti-inflammatory properties. Cherry juice also reduces the amount of uric acid in the blood, one of the chief causes of gout.

How Much is Enough

    To gain the full effects of cherry juice, drink two to three pints of pure, natural cherry juice a day, the equivalent of a half a pound of fresh or canned cherries, to keep your gout attacks at bay. This amounts to about two liters of cherry juice a day.

    Technically, it doesn't matter if you drink the cherry juice or eat the cherries themselves. They both contain the same qualities, but the juice is easier to consume, not to mention more economical.

Other Considerations

    Unless you are allergic to cherries and were not aware of this, the treatment has no side effects. Your body may take some time to adjust to the new level of juice intake if you don't normally drink juice.

    For variety, try drinking mixtures with other dark berries such as blackberries or raspberries, both of which have the same beneficial properties.
