Home Remedy for Bursitus

Tension between the bone and tendons in the knee, shoulder, arm, hip and ankle are cushioned by the bursa. When repetitive motion creates more friction than the bursa can handle, irritation and inflammation commonly known as bursitis occurs. Bursitis can also be caused by continued, repeated pressure, such as sleeping on one shoulder every night. The good news is that home remedies can treat this problem.

Don't Medicate, Placate

    Pain relievers with acetaminophen do not have an anti-inflammatory in them, so they don't help to deal with this aspect of bursitis. When at home, put the body part on ice, particularly when there is swelling, so that ice can bring it down and increase circulation. If there is no swelling, use heat instead; this increases circulation to the affected area.

    Use a stepladder for reaching over your head; try a new pair of shoes if your heel is the problem; or look for ways to adjust the activity that caused your bursitis pain to start. There are many different protective aids, such as pads and wraps, that will take the pressure off your affected area.

Go Natural

    Some of the best home remedies that are available today are things you can create from products you probably already have in your kitchen: foods. One is a potato. Grate two teaspoons and leave soaking overnight in a cup of water. The next morning, drink the potato water on an empty stomach. Green, leafy vegetables are also an excellent natural resource for bursitis, because they contain magnesium.

    For external treatments, try using warm olive oil, apple cider vinegar mixed with cayenne pepper, or sandalwood paste. These types of rubs and salves are great because they are made from natural ingredients and can provide instant relief for bursitis pain.

Vitamins and Oils

    Vitamins and oils are rich sources of nutrients our body needs but may not get in the necessary quantities. Those that are particularly effective for bursitis are vitamin E, which can be used topically, and vitamin B6, which is a great supplement in pill form.

    Some oils to use are castor oil, lobelia oil, lavender oil, olive oil, emu oil and sesame oil. These oils are not difficult to find from your local grocer or health food store and can be applied to the inflamed area to provide relief and healing.
