Crohn's & Colon Cleansing

Crohn's disease is an incurable inflammatory bowel disease that can only be treated by addressing the symptoms. Crohn's disease can cause very painful and uncomfortable symptoms, making the search for treatment of utmost importance for those suffering its affects. Depending upon the severity of your condition, your doctor's treatment recommendations may range from dietary adjustments and antidiarrheal medication to cortisteriods and surgery. Some alternative practitioners recommend various forms of colon cleansing to clean out the colon and reduce the symptoms of Crohn's disease.

Methods of Colon Cleansing

There are several ways to clean the colon, the most drastic method being colonic irrigation or colonic hydrotherapy. With colonic irrigation techniques, a holistic practitioner will insert a rubber tube in your rectum to flush out toxins and parasites from the intestines. This is considered the fastest and most effective method of removing harmful matter from the digestive tract. Holistic practitioners recommend colonic irrigation for those suffering with Crohn's disease as a starting point to begin the detoxification of the colon. Another method of colon cleansing involves the use of enemas. You may want to try some milder herbal enemas to begin such as aloe, catnip or slippery elm. If you are reluctant to try irrigation or enema therapies, you may want to try just taking the herbal supplements instead. This can be just as effective but the healing process is slower with this method, and you will notice changes in your symptoms more gradually. You can take any of the mentioned supplements orally or see your herbalist to recommend a specialized blend of colon cleansing herbs. The easiest way for you to cleanse your colon is fruit or juice fasting. You can cleanse your entire digestive tract by eating only fruits or ingesting fresh (no additives) juices. For three or four days you will need to eat only fruit and drink only water and fresh juices. After cleansing, begin introducing your body to food again slowly, eating only fresh vegetables and fruits. This will clean out the digestive tract safely and should be followed with permanent, healthy dietary changes.

Precautions

Most traditional Western medicine practitioners strongly recommend that you avoid colonic irrigation therapies if you have Crohn's disease or any other form of bowel disease. If you do choose to try a colonic irrigation make sure that you go to a reputable practitioner that uses clean and safe equipment. Remember that herbal enemas and supplements are not FDA approved so use caution with these methods of cleansing and initiate any changes gradually. Holistic and Western medicine practitioners both agree that dietary changes can be the most effective method of cleansing the colon and relieving symptoms in those suffering from Crohn's disease.
