What Are Negative Ions?

Ions are molecules or atoms that have uneven numbers of electrons and protons, making them either positive or negative. A negative ion has more electrons than protons. Several studies have demonstrated that negative ions can cause positive effects for humans.

General Effects

Dr. E. W. Kellogg (writing in the July 1984 issue of "Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine") has reported that negative air ions can have effects on plant and insect growth and physical and behavioral changes in humans.

Effects on Mood

In the July 2005 issue of "Psychological Medicine," Dr. Namni Goel reported findings that negative air ions can be used to effectively treat depression and other mood-related disorders.

Effects on Health

Negative air ions can have beneficial effects on recovery after exercise, according to an study by Dr. T. Ryushi published in the February 1998 issue of the "International Journal of Biometeorology."

Effects on Germs

Companies that sell negative ion products, such as n-ion.com, state that when air is negatively ionized (that is, when some molecules in the air carry a negative charge), it can reduce the number of microorganisms in the air by up to 52 percent. Microorganisms include viruses that carry colds and the flu.

Ions and Water

Negative ions are highly concentrated around waterfalls, beaches, and other running water. According to "The Owner's Manual for the Brain" by Pierce J. Howard, Ph.D. This is why waterfalls and beaches feel so refreshing.
