Over the Counter Menopause Medicine

Several good alternatives for managing the symptoms associated with menopause can be found in your local health food store. Herbal-based supplements for hot flashes or for balancing hormone levels are available as well as tinctures, creams and individual herbs that help with specific concerns.

Supplements

Most supplements for treating menopause symptoms use a combination of herbs or other ingredients such as wild yam root and hesperidin. These supplements can be helpful for general support, but you may need to try a few to determine which works best for you.

Creams

Natural progesterone creams are commonly used to alleviate symptoms such as fatigue and are now available over the counter. It's best to consult a physician before purchasing one of these.

Tinctures

Liquid, alcohol-based extracts of herbs known as tinctures, dropped into hot water for use as a tea, are absorbed easily and quickly by the body and can bring fast relief. Black cohosh is known for its ability to reduce hot flashes. Used in combination with herbs like dong quai and chasteberry, it can balance a variety of menopause symptoms.

Relief for Restlessness

Anxiety, restlessness and mood swings are common symptoms. While some women opt to go on antidepressants for relief, natural relaxants are also available. Valerian promotes relaxation and helps with insomnia or anxiety, and St. John's wort can calm the nervous system and lift mood.

Considerations

Have a physician run a complete hormonal panel before you investigate over-the-counter supplements. The results (levels too low or too high) will help you determine which direction to go in first; for example, low estrogen is generally associated with hot flashes.
