Alternative Remedies for Bladder Infections

Bladder infection is a condition that causes inflammation of the bladder. Commonly called a urinary tract infection, this condition may be treated with alternative remedies. Make sure that you visit the doctor before trying alternative remedies to make sure that there is not a serious condition responsible for your symptoms.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of fluids when you have a bladder infection. Drinking more fluids will increase your urine output and may help flush out the bacteria responsible for your infection. Drink cranberry juice to increase the acidity of your urine. This can help to stop the growth of bacteria. Blueberry juice is also as effective as cranberry. Both fruits contain arbutin, which are natural antibiotics. Avoid sugary beverages to stem the growth of bacteria. Sugar and alcohol can feed the bacteria and increase your symptoms.

Herbal Treatments

Use birch leaves for an herbal treatment for bladder infection or a urinary tract infection. Birch leaves are available as a tincture in herbal stores or whole food stores. Use a teaspoon of the tincture a few times a day as necessary. A tea can be made with birch bark by soaking the bark in a cup of boiling water.
Use dandelion for its diuretic effect. This herb does not treat the bacteria that is causing the infection, but it does increase urine output. Dandelion root can be made into a tea with one or two tablespoons steeped in a cup of boiling water.
Goldenseal is also a natural antibiotic to use for the treatment of bladder infection. Use along with Echinacea to strengthen the immune system. Goldenseal and Echinacea are available as a tincture. Use a teaspoon of each tincture three times a day to treat your bladder infection. See a doctor if you are experiencing a fever or the symptoms don't clear up in a few days. A serious bladder infection is treated with antibiotics.

Easing Discomfort

Pain in the back may be a sign of a more serious condition such as kidney infection. This requires medical attention. Use home remedies to ease the pain of a severe infection while you are being treated with traditional medicine. A sitz bath can provide relief from the discomfort of a bladder infection. Use the treatment several times a day when your symptoms are severe. Use a hot water bottle on the painful area to relieve your symptoms.
