Drug-Free Ways to Ease Sinus Pain & Pressure

When mucus gets trapped in the sinus cavities, they can become inflamed, infected and blocked. This causes sinus pain and pressure. There are numerous decongestants and antihistamines available to consumers that offer relief, but these often thicken the mucus, which compounds the problem over time. Several drug-free remedies can help ease sinus pain and pressure.

Moisturize

Keeping sinus passages moisturized is the key to preventing and relieving pain and pressure. If the mucus membranes dry out, they will become irritated, leading to more stuffiness. Drink lots of fluids to thin mucus and promote drainage. Steam is an old, tried and true remedy. Inhale the steam by bending over boiling water, using caution not burn yourself, or take a hot, steamy shower. The steam works in two ways, the vapors soothe the sinuses while moisturizing the nasal passage.

Irrigate the nasal passages with salt water. Irrigation will flush out mucus, germs and allergens, thin the mucus and moisturize the nasal cavity. There are several methods for nasal irrigations such as neti pots and saline sprays, but all you need is a bulb syringe, which is available in drug stores for about $2.

Other Remedies

Apply a warm compress to your face for 10 to 15 minutes every two hours. The heat will ease pain and pressure while the damp cloth will moisturize the sinuses. Add a drop of peppermint or eucalyptus oil to the compress. These natural oils can clear the nasal passages.

Sleep with your head elevated under a couple of pillows to make breathing more comfortable.

Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools and drinking alcoholic beverages. Both can have dehydrating effects and further irritate the sinuses.

Considerations

These suggestions are not meant to replace a doctor's advice. If you have sinus pain and pressure for more than a week or two, or if your symptoms are severe, see your doctor.
