What Are the Benefits of Flaxseed Oil on Dry Skin?

Dry skin has become a lucrative target of the beauty industry. Each new commercial boasts a different ingredient that can alleviate the uncomfortable condition. However, one dry skin cure exists that can also help with cholesterol levels---flaxseed oil.

Dry Skin Characteristics

Dry skin occurs when the natural oils in the skin dissipates, leaving a dry and itchy patch of skin. Factors such as the sun, wind, cold medications and skin conditions like psoriasis can cause the dry skin.

Flaxseed Oil Description

Flax seeds are harvested from the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum, which grows in Canada and the northwestern United States. The oil extracted from these seeds can be ingested in liquid or capsule form, or applied topically.

Flaxseed Oil Properties

Flaxseed and their oil contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to act as a skin lubricant. Flaxseed oil is found in liquid form or as an ingredient in lotions.

Uses

For dry skin, flaxseed oil liquid alone will suffice, but the lotions work as well. However, the benefits of the supplement are best realized when the oil is ingested and absorbed into the body. For example, ingesting the oil in liquid or pill form is the only way to reap the cholesterol-lowering benefits.
