Household Cures for Ringworm

Household Cures for Ringworm

Ringworm is a fungal infection that gets its name from the raised red ring that it creates on the skin. It is spread by direct physical contact. There are home remedies that you may try, but a simple and effective cure is to expose the infected area to natural sunlight. The UV rays of the sun are a potent fungal killer, according to Christina's Home Remedies website.

Essential Oils

Mild to moderate cases of ringworm can be treated with a combination of essential oils, available from health food stores and the natural food sections of major supermarkets. Peppermint, myrrh, tea tree, geranium, and lavender essential oils have been used to varying degrees of success, according to the Safe Natural Cures website, when directly applied to affected areas. Mix one drop of lavender essential oil with two drops of tea tree essential oil and one teaspoon of Jojoba Carrier Oil. This mixture should be applied with a cotton swab to the affected area three times daily.

Ginger and Golden Seal Tincture

Ginger has powerful anti-fungal properties. A useful ringworm-fighting paste can be made when ginger is combined with golden seal, a perennial herb with anti-inflammatory properties, explains the Christina's Home Remedies site. Mix one tablespoon of ginger powder with three to four drops of liquid golden seal extract to form a paste, which should be applied liberally to the affected area three times daily. Leave the paste on for 30 minutes or until it has completely dried. Then rinse off with warm water.

Vinegar and Lemon Juice

Vinegar and lemon juice are strongly acidic, a property which is hostile to fungal growth, says Christina's Home Remedies. The best way to apply vinegar or lemon juice to a ringworm-infected area is directly and undiluted. Soak a cotton ball or cotton makeup pad in apple cider vinegar or pure lemon juice and affix it to the affected spot with a bandage for 30 minutes, twice daily. This procedure should be repeated for one week.
