Natural Ways of Getting Rid of Hair Lice

Head lice can affect anyone. They are human parasites. You cannot get infected by standing near someone with hair lice. However, if you share a comb, brush, hat or towel that touches someone's head, you may become infected. You can kill lice quickly, effectively and safely without the dangerous chemicals used in store products to get rid of lice.

    Vinegar is very active in the use of eliminating nits. Olive oil has been tested and proven to kill head lice. Combine equal amounts of vinegar and olive oil in a bowl. For shorter hair use about one third of a cup and a half of cup each for longer hair. Mix the vinegar and oil thoroughly. Place the mixture on the hair. Massage into scalp, behind the ears and at the base of the neck. Leave this on the hair for one hour, then shampoo it. Use an anti-lice comb to remove all the lice and eggs from the hair.

    Tea tree oil contains two important ingredients: cine-ole and terpinen. When they come in contact with lice, they cause nerve death. Take some of your regular shampoo in your hand for hair washing. Add about three or four drops of tea tree oil into the shampoo. Massage it into your scalp and proceed to wash your hair as normal. When you're done, use the nit comb to remove the lice from your scalp. Use this mix three or four times each week until the lice are completely gone.

    Listerine is just not for bad breath. It contains alcohol and eucalyptus which aid in the elimination of hair lice. Pour the mouthwash on your hair and thoroughly rub it into the hair and scalp. Leave on for about 20 minutes. Shampoo your hair and thoroughly rinse it. Take the lice comb and remove the lice and nits from your hair. Repeat as needed a few times a week until they are gone.

    The Mayo Clinic recommends the use of vinegar to rid your hair of lice. Soak your hair down with vinegar, and leave it on for three or four minutes. Use a towel to dry your hair. Take a nit comb or a fine tooth comb to remove the lice from your hair. You will have to redo treatments every three days for a minimum of two weeks. This is a good remedy to use for children under two years of age.

    Mayonnaise has the ability to smother the lice so they die. Mayonnaise also makes it easier for the lice to be removed. Wash your hair first, then apply mayonnaise all over your scalp. Cover with a plastic cap or towel. Leave it on your hair overnight. In the morning, rinse out the mayonnaise. Take a nit comb and start combing. The lice will slide right out of the hair.

    The thyme essential oil component is an anti-parasitic: it will smother the cells of the lice to kill them. Apple cider vinegar acts to calm your skin, which could become slightly irritated from the essential oil. Mix four cups of apple cider vinegar with four cups of water and one-quarter ounce of thyme essential oil. Mix thoroughly and then massage it into your scalp. Do not get any of this mixture into your eyes. Keep massaging your hair for thirty minutes, then rinse well. Comb out the lice and nits with a fine tooth comb or nit comb. Repeat this mixture three days in a row, then wait a week. Repeat the mixture again for three consecutive days. After the last treatment, the lice should be gone.
