Information About Bee Propolis

Information About Bee Propolis

Bee propolis is a natural resin created by bees. It is also called bee glue or bee putty, according to Medline Plus. The substance contains beeswax, pollen and different bee secretions. It is valued for its medical properties.

History

The BeeVital Propolis website claims that ancient Egyptians used bee propolis as an ingredient in mummification. Ancient Greek, Roman and Arabic medical documents recommended its use for breathing problems, infections, skin-related diseases and joint discomfort.

Benefits

Propolis has potential as an enamel hardener for teeth and a protection against cavities. Medline Plus indicates that bee propolis may also be useful in the treatment of mouth ulcers, stomach ulcers and colds, as well as providing protection against various viruses and diseases, but as of 2010 no reliable research studies have examined these claims.

Warning

According to Medline Plus, people who are allergic to bee stings should not use propolis or other bee-related products. Bee propolis reacts like a bee sting in some patients, causing itching, hives, sneezing, and tightness of breath. Anaphylactic shock can cause death in severe cases. People who are allergic to black poplar or balsam of Peru may not be able to tolerate propolis.
