Recipe for Nasal Spray

Recipe for Nasal Spray

Nasal spray is a solution which is sprayed directly into the nostrils to clean the nasal passages or deliver a dose of medicine. Homemade sprays are usually made with salt and baking soda, resulting in a saline solution which can be used to rinse the sinus passages, to alleviate or prevent infection or clear blockages.

Materials

Sea salt or rock salt, baking soda and distilled water are the only required ingredients to make your own nasal spray. All items can be found in your local supermarket or natural health store. You'll also need a recycled nasal spray bottle. Clean it thoroughly prior to filling with the homemade nasal spray to avoid any interactions with former ingredients. If you don't have an old nasal spray bottle, you may use the solution as directed below.

Preparation

Bring one pint of distilled water to a boil over medium-high heat. Turn off the heat, add tsp. salt and tsp. baking soda, and stir until the ingredients are thoroughly dissolved. The salt in this recipe is antiseptic and moisturizing, and the baking soda acts as an alkaline barrier to prevent bacteria from sticking. Fill the nasal spray bottle with the solution and discard the remainder. Allow the mixture to cool completely before using. If a nasal spray bottle is not available, simply mix the solution and transfer to a clean bowl.

Usage

To use the bottle, lean your head over a sink and tilt your chin forward slightly. Insert the tip of the bottle into one nostril and squeeze gently. Spray until you feel the solution hit the back of your throat, and then sniff gently. For the best results, aim the tip of the bottle toward the outside corner of your eye while squeezing. Repeat the process on the other nostril, then blow your nose gently.

Alternatively, you may use the "snuffle" technique. Wash your hands thoroughly and dry them. Pour about tsp. of the mixture into the palm of your hand. Lean over a sink and sniff the nasal spray into one nostril while holding the other closed. Repeat with the same nostril for a total of two applications, and then sniff two handfuls in the other nostril. Gently blow your nose when finished.

Tips

Always make a fresh batch each time you use the nasal spray, and discard any remaining liquid. Although the salt acts as a preservative and the mixture could be stored, it's best to avoid any contamination by making a fresh batch for each nasal rinse.

If you've been prescribed nasal medication by your doctor, you may still use the homemade nasal spray. It's recommended that you use the solution first, and then wait 15 to 20 minutes before using your medication.
