Foods to Cure Cold Sores

Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are painful sores that often appear around the mouth or lips. Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus and while there are no cures for cold sores, there are remedies you can try in order to reduce the frequency and painfulness of them. Read on to find foods that you can eat in order to reduce cold sores.

Vitamin B12

A healthy diet can actually help you maintain the frequency of cold sores. Studies show that people with cold sores are low in Vitamin B12. When they add this vitamin to their diet, many people see improvement immediately in their condition.

Arginine

Foods high in arginine have been shown to aid in the growth of the herpes virus, while lysine works to inhibit the virus.
Avoid foods high in arginine, such as chocolate, nuts, grains, seeds and oatmeal.

Foods to Eat

Eating plain yogurt is good for preventing cold sores. Yogurt has been shown to stimulate the immune system, and people who add yogurt to their daily diet were said to have gotten fewer, if any, cold sores.

Foods that will prevent cold sores are: beef, fish, chicken, cheese, milk, eggs and fruits. Make these foods a part of your daily diet in order to keep control of cold sore outbreaks.

Home Remedies

To dry out the cold sores, try steeping a tea bag in boiling water for a few minutes. Allow it to cool and then apply it to the sores. After a few days the cold sores will crust over and disappear.
Applying mint extract to the sore will speed the healing process.

If you are still having trouble with your cold sore or if it gets worse, consult your doctor to get the help and medication you need.
