Natural Remedies for Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck, becomes overactive. It releases too much thyroxine and speeds up metabolism. There are three forms of this condition and most suffer from Graves' disease. Common symptoms are weight loss regardless of the amount of food consumed, feelings of nervousness and irritability, insomnia and perspiration. There are many natural treatments which can alleviate symptoms of this condition. Always discuss use of supplements with your doctor.

Herbal Treatments

Bugleweed tablets reduce nervousness, irritability, insomnia, fatigue and increased sweating. Take this supplement as directed on the product label. Motherwort stops heart palpitations. Buy the loose herb and steep one teaspoon in one cup of water. Drink one cup three times a day. Lemon balm tea can calm an overactive thyroid. Steep two tablespoons in one cup of water and drink as desired. Green tea extract is good for its antioxidant effects. Take 250 to 500 milligrams daily. Scutellaria is a great natural remedy to treat and prevent viral infections without stimulating the immune system. Take 1,000 milligrams three times daily. This is recommended because many researchers believe this condition can be triggered and also worsened by respiratory viruses in some people who have it.

Avoid herbs with a stimulating effect such as all forms of ginseng, astragalus, wheat grass, ashwagandha and bladderwrack.

Other Supplements

Take a multivitamin as directed on the product label to ensure you are getting adequate amounts of all important nutrients. Omega 3 fatty acids are good for immunity and alleviating inflammation. Take one or two capsules of fish oil or take one or two tablespoons daily. L-carnitine decreases thyroid activity. Take 500 to 2,000 milligrams daily. Do not use iron supplements; they may interfere with certain thyroid medications.

Other Suggestions

Avoid stimulants like caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Researchers believe that some cases of hyperthyroidism are linked to allergies. Eliminate potential food allergens such as wheat, soy, corn, dairy, preservatives and food additives. You may want to get tested for food allergies. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables; they are high in antioxidants. Avoid eating lots of processed foods, reduce consumption of fatty meats and refined foods like sugar, white bread and white pasta.
