Home Remedy for Elbow Tendinitis

Tendinitis is an inflammation of the tendons. Tendons are the connective tissue that joins muscles to bones. A strain, most commonly from a sports injury, is the most common cause. This condition usually resolves itself in about two or three weeks, but it can turn chronic if calcium salts deposit themselves along the tendon fibers. Natural treatments for tendinitis are good for relieving swelling and pain as well as helping to stabilize collagen and prevent further injury. Serious injuries should be examined by a doctor.

Herbal Treatments

Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple. It relieves swelling. Take 500 to 750 milligrams three times daily. If you are allergic to pineapple, a rash may appear. Discontinue use if this occurs. Cayenne in the form of capsaicin cream is an effective topical pain reliever. These creams are readily available in supermarkets and drug stores. Apply as directed on the product label. Devil's claw is a potent natural pain reliever. Take 1,500 to 2,500 milligrams three times daily for no longer than three weeks. Do not use this herb if you have any sort of heart condition. Curcumin is a strong anti-inflammatory herb and will also prevent further breakdown of collagen.. Take 400 milligrams three times a day between meals. Grapeseed or pinebark extract can speed recovery and help prevent further injury. Take 100 milligrams of one or the other three times daily. Licorice tea will reduce inflammation. Drink three cups daily. Do not use licorice if you have heart problems or high blood pressure. White willow bark is an effective natural pain reliever that has a similar chemical make up as aspirin. Take two to three teaspoons in one cup of boiling water and drink three times a day. Do not use if you have an allergy to aspirin or take blood thinning medication.

Other Natural Supplements

Vitamin C helps with healing and reducing inflammation. Take 250 to 500 milligrams three times a day. Calcium and magnesium are well known for their positive effects on muscles and connective tissue. Take 1,500 milligrams and 750 milligrams daily respectively. Essential fatty acids fight inflammation. Take 1,000 to 1,500 milligrams daily of either fish oil or evening primrose oil. Citrus bioflavonoids stop breakdown of collagen. Take 1,000 milligrams three times a day.

Acupuncture

A study published in a 1999 edition of the journal Pain studied two groups of people, one receiving actual acupuncture and one receiving sham acupuncture. Sham acupuncture happens when needles are inserted in areas that are not considered acupuncture points that stimulate a healing response. The group receiving real acupuncture reported less pain, improved ability to move the affected area, and perform everyday activities. These benefits were reported for up to three months after the acupuncture sessions.
