Alternative Treatments for Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is the most prevalent cancer of the urinary tract. A majority of people are diagnosed with this condition when it is still confined to the bladder so surgery is a main treatment option. Chemotherapy and immunotherapy are also used in treatment as well. There are herbal medicines that can help with this condition but they are most effective when used in combination with standard therapies. Be sure to tell your doctor about any supplements you are taking.

Herbal Treatments

Astragalus is good for activating the p53 gene. This gene stops defective cells from multiplying. Take 1,000 milligrams three times a day. Cat's claw is a potent immune stimulant with a long history of use. It can raise white blood cells counts decimated by standard treatments such as chemotherapy. Use in tincture form and take as directed on the label in half a cup of water with some lemon juice. Garlic is a potent immunity booster and can complement immunotherapy. Take 900 milligrams daily. Maitake is beneficial after bladder cancer surgery to help decrease the risk of a recurrence. Take 2,000 milligrams three times daily after meals. Red wine catechins found in resveratrol inhibits the cellular processes that cause tumors to form and spread. Take 250 milligrams of resveratrol s three times daily between meals. Siberian ginseng stimulates the immune system and can ward off the negative immune-suppressing effects of chemotherapy agents used to fight bladder cancer. Take the extract as directed on the label.

Do not use astragalus if there is fever or infection. Do not use cat's claw if you have type 1 diabetes. Avoid Siberian ginseng if you have an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

Formulas

Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity is a traditional Chinese formula used to treat bladder cancer. It can stop multiplication of cancer cells and can help prevent immune system damage common to chemotherapy treatment. It should be used under a doctor's care after chemotherapy is completed. Essiac tea is a very popular natural remedy with a very long history of use in North America. It contains many herbs known for their immune-stimulating properties and there are many anecdotal reports of success with cancer. However, studies regarding its effectiveness have been mixed.

Do not use the above Chinese formula within 48 hours of taking Cisplatin chemotherapy.
