Herbal Treatment for Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection. It affects the gums and the bone surrounding the teeth. Left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. Gingivitis is a mild form of periodontal disease where the gums are swollen, red and easily bleed. If this condition is untreated, it can lead to a more advanced form of periodontal disease called periodontitis. Bacteria form toxins that get under the gum line and destroy gum tissue and the bones supporting the teeth. There are many natural treatments that can treat periodontal disease by dealing with the infection and alleviating inflammation.

Herbal Treatments

    Goldenseal is a strong antibacterial agent and is especially good to use when experiencing pain and soreness. Make a mouthwash by taking quarter teaspoon of salt, half a capsule of powder and 1 cup of warm water. Aloe gel eases inflammation. Clove oil is an essential oil well known for its use in dental care. It can stop gum pain and is highly antibacterial. Use three drops in 1 cup of warm water as a mouthwash twice daily. Tea tree is another essential oil highly valued for fighting bacteria. This can be directly rubbed on the gums. Green tea catechins also fight bacteria and keep starches from turning into sugar, which is very harmful to teeth. Take 240 milligrams three times a day.

    Do not use green tea within one hour of taking other medicines. It could interfere with absorption.

    The traditional Chinese herbal formula Ophiopogonis Decoction is beneficial for bleeding gums, especially if caused by dry mouth. It is used as a mouthwash. Do not use when gums are actively bleeding or if you have a fever.

Other Natural Treatments

    Complex carbohydrates in cranberry juice can keep different forms of bacteria from attaching to each other, preventing plaque. Take 100 milligrams of coenzyme Q10 daily. Its ability to improve oxygenation throughout the body helps destroy bacteria. A baking soda and hydrogen peroxide mix applied to the gums can ease soreness. Eat lots of berries. They contain substances that strengthen the gum tissue.

Other Suggestions

    Dry brushing without toothpaste with a soft brush can remove built-up plaque. Be sure to floss at least once a day and try to get under the gum line to scrape the tooth's surface. Massing the gums with the fingers several times a day is also helpful. Stimulating the gums is helpful, as well. Run the end of a wooden toothpick unnder the gum line. Do not smoke. It can delay the healing process. Be sure to change toothbrushes frequently, about once a month. Also, it is advised to store your toothbrush in some sort of bacteria eliminating advice.
