Household Treatment for External Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids located near or outside the anus and can be painful for many sufferers. Thankfully, they are easily treated at home and often don't require medical intervention.

Fiber and Water

Fiber supplements taken with plenty of water can go a long way toward relief from hemorrhoids. While psyllium-based supplements are most common and effective, there are also supplements based on wheat dextrin or methylcellulose fiber.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel can be applied to the affected area with cotton balls or soft tissues. It helps cool, clean and provide relief.

Sitz Baths

A warm bath or basin filled with warm water and a handful of Epsom salts can provide great relief from pain and swelling. Soaking daily, a few times a day, for 10 minutes each time can often bring relief within a day or two.

Herbal Preparations

A paste made from comfrey root, as well as poultices made of elderberry and used externally, can also relieve pain.

Stop Straining

Sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time, straining on the toilet and improperly lifting things can all put strain on hemorrhoidal blood vessels. Stretching can increase blood circulation throughout the body and help blood flow when sitting or standing for long periods can't be avoided.
