Complementary Treatment of Dementia

Dementia encompasses a variety of symptoms that impact social and intellectual function. Several types exist, with Alzheimer's disease being the most common. Several natural treatments can serve as a complement to standard therapies.

Considerations

Do not use natural treatments for dementia without talking to your doctor first. You do not want to use anything that might interfere with standard medications.

Lifestyle Suggestions

The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests ways to improve various aspects of behavior. Methods include regular walks with a trusted person, bright light therapy, listening to calming music and having a pet.

Using Natural Supplements

Natural supplements might be beneficial for behavior, memory and other aspects of dementia, but more research is needed. The University of Maryland Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic list the following: vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10, ginkgo, huperzine A, zinc, phosphatidylserine, B-vitamins, bacopa, American ginseng, lemon balm and vinpocetine.

Alternative Treatment

The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests acupuncture might improve memory while massage can improve behavior.

Dietary Suggestions

Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. They are rich in beneficial antioxidants--chemicals that protect the cells from damage. Berries, particularly blueberries, might be of particular benefit for dementia.
