Papain is considered a protein-clinging enzyme that comes from the papaya and other plants, according to Diet and Health.net. Papain aids in the digestion of protein and is known to have a soothing effect on the stomach. There are a number of medical and dietary used for papain.

Significance

    Papain is widely used as a meat tenderizer. Papain helps break down the connective tissue in red meat to make it more edible. This enzyme can also be used to make pet food more palatable by reducing its viscosity.

Types of Uses

    Papain is sometimes used as a palliative for ulcers. It can also be used to reduce swelling and high fevers. At times, papain is even used to dissolve adhesions after surgery.

Other Uses

    Papain is sometimes injected in its chemical form, chemopapain, for treating pinched nerves and slipped discs in the spine. According to the Mayo Clinic, this use of papain has fallen out of favor in recent years, and the drug is no longer sold in the U.S.
