White blood cells, also known leukocytes, are necessary because they help fight infection. If there's a low number of white blood cells, it could be due to liver disease, the absence of a spleen, or bone marrow failure. There are several drugs that can be used to raise the number of white blood cells, as well as a number of alternative methods.
