Home Cold Remedies Using Garlic

Home Cold Remedies Using Garlic

Garlic is a food that is renowned for its health benefits, including the ability to improve cardiovascular health, strengthen the immune system and relieve cold symptoms. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the symptoms of people who had colds "dissipated more quickly among those receiving garlic compared to those receiving placebo." Garlic is used in home cold remedies throughout the world and can be the cure for what ails you.

Garlic Tea

A simple home remedy for colds is to drink garlic tea. Simply mince or crush 8 to 12 raw garlic cloves and mix with two cups of water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer on low heat for 10 minutes. Raw garlic is preferred to minced garlic in a jar, but you can use either. Drink the tea while it is hot. You can reheat leftover tea for later consumption. Consider adding honey to your tea. Honey will sweeten your drink and is known to provide relief to sore throats. You can also add lemon to your garlic tea because it is also commonly used as a cold remedy.

Garlic Soup

Garlic soup will relieve your cold symptoms and is also a great way to fill your nutritional needs. The hot soup will help to soothe your throat while the garlic works on boosting your immune system. Chop 3 or 4 garlic cloves and simmer in 2 cups of water for 1 hour. Add chicken bouillon to the water for extra flavor. A more hearty alternative is to add lots of garlic to your favorite soup. Stick with soups that require chicken broth, which is another common cold remedy. Fresh vegetables added to the soup will provide you with extra vitamins and minerals to boost your immune system.

Raw Garlic or Supplements

Consuming raw garlic or taking a garlic supplement is another easy way to cure your cold. One or two garlic cloves a day is all that's needed to relieve your cold symptoms. While it doesn't have the added soothing benefits of a warm soup or tea, the immune-boosting effects of garlic remain the same. Additionally, including raw garlic or supplements as part of your regular diet is a great way to keep your immune system healthy and help you to avoid getting sick in the first place.
