How to Treat the Hiccups Using Home Remedies

Hiccups can be rather annoying and usually go away a few minutes after you get them. However, when they don't, you need a quick remedy. Hiccups usually occur when someone eats too fast, swallows air when yawning, or eats foods that irritate diaphragm.
A hiccup occurs when the diaphragm contracts repeatedly and causes the vocal cords to slam shut, therefore causing the "hic" sound. Easy home remedies that can be found in your refrigerator or kitchen cupboards. When the hiccups last too long and start to cause abdominal pain, it is time to see a doctor.

    Put a tablespoon of sugar in your mouth and suck on it slowly. You can also try placing the sugar under your tongue and letting it dissolve. Sugar does not cure the hiccups every time, but it may help.

    Mix together one cup of plain yogurt and two tablespoons of salt. This odd combination sometimes helps get rid of hiccups.

    Chew digestible papaya tablets or eat a fresh piece of papaya or pineapple. Sometimes hiccups are caused by heartburn or indigestion. Chewing papaya tablets or eating fresh papaya or pineapple helps with these issues.

    Boil two cups of water and a teaspoon of fresh cardamom powder until one cup of liquid remains. Strain the liquid and let it cool slightly. While the liquid is still warm, drink a glassful.
