About Ionic Foot Baths

About Ionic Foot Baths

The idea behind ionic foot baths is cellular cleansing. Those that specialize in giving ionic foot baths believe that people's bodies are overburdened with toxins from the air they breath, the processed foods they eat, and even from the fact that many people do not exercise enough. These specialists believe that it is possible to use an ionic foot bath to draw these toxins down the body and out through the feet into the water in the foot bath. An ionic foot bath can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes.

Features

The ionic foot bath is composed of a tub, water, sea salt and an energizing cartridge. All of these things working together make it possible for the ionic foot bath to help detoxify the body.

Function

The ionic foot bath works because of electrolysis. Electrolysis is the process that makes the toxins in the body leave through the feet into the water of the foot tub possible. The energizing cartridge which is a part of the setup of the ionic foot bath, makes possible a process called ionization. The cartridge along with the other components change the water by breaking down the water molecules into ions. The ions are then broken down as well, and this then causes a chemical reaction between anions and cations. Because of osmosis the anions are able to move past the skin of the feet and into the body where they strengthen the cells of the body that have been weakened by toxins.

Effects

Many who swear by ionic foot baths claim say they are more clear headed, that painful conditions such as arthritis have gone away and not come back, that they feel more relaxed, and some have claimed that it can even be part of a program to help cure chronic or deadly diseases such as cancer. In theory an ionic foot bath is supposed to improve liver function, improve sleeping and even enhance the immune system.

One thing to keep in mind with ionic foot baths is that those with pacemakers, those who have had an organ transplant, and expectant or nursing mothers should not use an ionic foot bath.

Theories/Speculation

Some podiatrists state that ionic foot baths do not work at all and that the stuff that people see in the water is just a byproduct of the chemical reaction caused by the energizing cartridge which sends a low current through the water, and minerals and sea salt which are in the water already.

Geography

Ionic foot baths are very popular in Europe, but it has only been in the last few years that they have become more readily available in the United States. In most cases those that use the ionic foot bath do so in Spas because the purchase the equipment itself to be used in the home is cost prohibitive. An ionic foot bath for the home can easily cost over $700.
