Supplies for Massage Therapists

Supplies for Massage Therapists

Massage therapists have many options for running their businesses. Some prefer to work exclusively at a spa, others set up a home-based office, and some prefer to travel to the client. Decisions about supplies should take into consideration what type of massage business you plan to have. If you plan on focusing on sports massage, the necessary supplies will be different from what you need if you want to do chair massages or work directly for a spa.

The Table

A massage table usually is the most important purchase for a massage business. The type of massage practice you have should determine the type of table you purchase. For example, a stationary table will work well for a home office, but a portable one is necessary if you are going to the client. The cost of tables will depend on the features you want. The features that are most important are stability and strength. The table should be comfortable with enough foam to cushion the body. The table covering should be durable yet soft. The face rest should be a priority, however, other "add-ons" are not as vital. Armrests, additional bolsters and other features are offered. A carrying case is a recommended purchase for portable tables. Some therapists opt for a massage chair. A chair is made to transport and may be a good option, although it can exclude clients wanting a full massage. No matter which table you purchase, make sure it has a warranty to safeguard your investment.

Towels and Linens

Large towels and sheets to cover the table and drape the client are a must as are small towels or pillowcases to cover the face rest. Robes can make the client's massage experience more comfortable, although they are not considered a requirement.

Oils, Creams and Lotions

Depending on the type of massage, oils, creams or lotions are necessary to give a proper massage. A chair massage typically is performed with the clothes on so lotions are not required. Practice with several types of oils, creams or lotions to find what works well for you and the client. Have more than one on hand in case a client prefers something different.

Atmosphere

The ambiance of the massage is decided by the type of massage. A sports massage may be performed on the track field or in the gymnasium while a relaxing massage is intended to use all the senses to set a mood. Candles or incense often are incorporated into a massage experience. Music adds a great touch and one or two CDs will work well for starting a business. The CDs should be soothing. Instrumentals or nature sounds such as ocean sounds work well for most clients.

Other Supplies

Other supplies such as warm stones or body scrubs can be incorporated into the practice at the beginning or as the business develops. Massage schools have many resources for purchasing items such as tables. Oils, lotions and creams can be purchased from massage supply companies or health food stores. Towels and linens can be purchased from home furnishing stores.
