Fish Oil for Menopause

Menopause causes a variety of changes in the body. These changes produce unpleasant symptoms as well as increase the risk for certain health problems. Fish oil might be beneficial for certain problems associated with this change of life.

Heart Health

    Menopausal women are at greater risk for heart problems. Fish oil is known for its heart-health benefits and specifically its ability to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. This reduces the risk of heart disease and heart attack.

Hot Flashes

    Lower levels of estrogen during menopause affect the production of certain chemicals in the body known as eicosanoids and arachidonic acid; imbalances in production trigger hot flashes. Fish oil restores the balance and can ease this uncomfortable symptom.

Bone Loss

    Fish oil can inhibit the production of chemicals that trigger bone loss, which is another problem caused by changing hormone levels.

Eating Fish

    Eating fish can offer benefits as well; include fish in your diet at least twice a week.

Talk to Your Doctor

    Talk with your doctor before using fish oil supplements, especially if you are taking blood-thinning medications like Coumadin or using aspirin therapy. Achieving benefits from supplementation requires taking large doses--at least several thousand milligrams daily.
