Natural Ways to Help With Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a common problem, but the particular foods and conditions that can set off an attack vary among acid reflux sufferers. Eventually you will be able to associate more foods with a flare-up and may be able to adjust your diet accordingly. You may be able to avoid medications by trying certain herbs and home remedies that can alleviate acid-reflux symptoms by supporting the digestive system.

Vinegar and Ginger Root

Apple cider vinegar can be used in several ways when fighting an acid reflux attack. If you are experiencing acute symptoms, try to swallow two or three tablespoons of the undiluted vinegar immediately. You can also make a mixture one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and half a glass of water to drink before or after a meal. This mixture can help prevent attacks and soothes digestion. If your flare-ups tend to occur in the middle of your meals, try drinking this mixture with your meal. Ginger is a digestive aid that can soothe acid reflux symptoms in a variety of ways. You can purchase capsule supplements at the health-food store, but many get best results when using ginger in its organic form. Try chewing a piece of candied ginger before meals or when you feel your acid reflux kicking in. Incorporate ginger root into your stir fries and other dishes at least three or four times a week. Chamomile is also a soothing herb for the digestive tract. Drink a cup of hot chamomile tea after dinner with a piece of fresh ginger root added to the tea.

Other Remedies

Aloe vera juice can also relieve acid reflux symptoms when taken before meals. Aloe juice can be a bit thick and hard to swallow, so mix it with a light fruit juice if that does not aggravate your acid reflux. If you are not sensitive to lactose, a glass of milk after an upsetting meal may give you relief. Chewing almonds in the morning and between meals can also ease digestion. Chew sugar-free gum after meals to stimulate saliva production, which will dilute the contents of your stomach.
