Honey Treatment for Burns

Honey has been used as a topical treatment for wounds for generations, and unlike some forms of alternative medicine, the reason for honey treatment is based in sound science.

Hygroscopic Properties

Honey is hygroscopic, meaning that it attracts water molecules. When applied to a wound, this quality creates an environment inhospitable to most bacteria.

Antiseptic Properties

Honey contains the chemical elements necessary to create hydrogen peroxide, which has antiseptic properties. When honey is applied to the skin, the sodium in the skin begins the chemical reaction that produces hydrogen peroxide. This adds another layer of antibacterial protection to your wound dressing.

Sugar Saturation

Honey is a saturated solution, meaning that it contains about as many solids--in this case, sugar--dissolved in it as it can contain. Because of this, honey is too sweet for bacteria to survive in it.

Acidity

Honey is slightly acidic, which is deadly for most bacteria, thus preventing infection.

Warning

Honey is potentially dangerous to small children if ingested; honey sometimes contains botulism spores that can make infants and toddlers very sick.
