Organic Products for Acne

Organic Products for Acne

According to the Organic Trade Organization's Web site, organic products are grown and produced without antibiotics, synthetic hormones, pesticides or fertilizers. According to the Mayo Clinic, acne is formed from the overproduction of oil, dead skin cells that clog pores and bacteria. Treating acne with organic products is preferable as organic products tend to be simply or minimally processed and are thus better for the skin.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil, extracted from the Australian Melaleuca tree, is a topical antiseptic, according to Mayo Clinic. It is often used as an antimicrobial agent, as the cause of some acne is often thought to be bacterial in nature. A study of 124 patients by Bassett, Pannowitz and Barnetson suggests that treatments of at least 5 percent tea tree oil were effective, although the effects were slower to show than a comparable treatment with 5 percent benzoyl peroxide, an inorganic chemical.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a medicinal plant found in desert climates. Aloe Vera has been proven to have antimicrobial and antibacterial properties in addition to its anti-inflammatory properties. Aloe Vera has therefore been implicated as a treatment that soothes inflamed acne spots and kills bacteria-causing acne.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is an astringent made from the bark of the North American witch hazel shrub, which flowers in the winter. The Native Americans of the North Americas used witch hazel medicinally to treat ulcers, sores and even tumors. Today, alcohol is added to make it a more powerful astringent, according to the Steven Foster Group, a company specializing in herbs and medicinal plants. Several active compounds in witch hazel include various types of tannins, which are thought to be responsible for witch hazel's astringent properties. Witch hazel dries the skin, which mitigates the formation of acne, especially on oily skin.
