Calendula Ointment Uses

Calendula Ointment Uses

Because of its healing properties, Calendula has been used medicinally for centuries. Although it has many medicinal uses, its topical preparations are very popular. While no one knows for certain what gives Calendula its healing abilities, experts at the University of Maryland Medical Center acknowledge that it appears to act as an anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and antibacterial. From treating conditions to preventing them, Calendula ointment can be used for a variety of purposes.

Dermatitis

According to the Mayo Clinic, Calendula cream can help soothe and protect against contact dermatitis. In fact, the University of Maryland Medical Center notes that a study has shown that Calendula may help prevent contact dermatitis caused by radiation treatment in patients with breast cancer. That said, Calendula may also cause irritation or an allergic reaction if applied to broken skin.

Wound Care

You can use Calendula to promote healing when you have a cut, burn or bruise. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic, Calendula may encourage more rapid healing and prevent and treat minor infections.

Insect Bites/Stings

Calendula can also be used to ease the pain caused by a bug bite or sting. The Mayo Clinic advises that you apply a Calendula ointment directly to the site of the bee sting for relief.
