Over-the-counter heating pads offer a ready source of therapeutic heat. The best heating pad is the one that suits your specific needs, so before you go to compare heating pads, try to get a clear idea of how you'll be using it. Perhaps you'd prefer to use the heating pad sitting up instead of laying down, or you might rather have a plug-in electrical heating pad instead of a gel pad you must microwave every time you want heat. You must also take into account whether you'll be using the heating pad to treat a relatively large area, like your back, or a small area like a wrist. Once you know how you'll use the heating pad, you're ready to compare the various options.

Line the heating pads up side by side, if at all possible, to compare them. Start by comparing the size of the heating surface versus the body part you intend to heat, and put away any heating pads that aren't of appropriate size. Next, eliminate any heating pads that aren't shaped to suit you; some may prefer thicker gel heating pads while others might want slimmer pads, heated by electrical coils without the gel, that can be easily wrapped around a limb.

Evaluate the controls on the heating pads. Options to look for include a built-in timer or auto shut-off after a certain period of time to help reduce the risk of accidental burns. High-end heating pads also allow you to adjust the pad's heat between several levels. If you prefer a microwaveable heating pad to one that plugs in, you can limit your search to only those pads at this point.

Gauge how long the cord on each heating pad is--you may need to ask permission from store employees to take the pads out of their packaging to do this. The longer the cord, the better, as it offers a better chance of letting you get far enough away from the electrical outlet to find a comfortable spot.

List the heating pads in order of preference based on the above features. You may find it helpful to write the different pads down on a sheet of paper, with your highest preference at the top of the list. Next, note down the cost of each heating pad. Finally, select the most desirable heating pad on the list that you can afford.
