Home Remedy for Athlete's Feet

Athlete's foot is also known as tinea pedis and ringworm of the foot. It is a type of fungal skin infection that results in uncomfortable symptoms such as itchiness, scaling and flaking of specific areas. Athlete's foot generally occurs from being in moist places where individuals walk without shoes, such as showers, saunas and bathhouses. It usually occurs on the feet, but can also occur on other body parts, such as the groin. Practicing proper hygiene is a good way to avoid getting athlete's foot. There are several home remedies for the condition.

Tea tree oil

    Tea tree oil has antifungal benefits. If you simply gently rub some tea tree oil between your toes, it can help soothe the symptoms of athlete's foot, such as burning and itching. For quick and immediate relief of the symptoms, you can soak your feet entirely into an antiseptic mouthwash such as Act or Listerine. To make sure that your feet and toes stray dry, you can sprinkle a little bit of corn starch over them. Corn starch is highly effective at soaking up moisture.

Dry Feet

    Keeping your feet dry is a good way to reduce symptoms of athlete's foot, and also to make sure that you do not get it again. If your feet are sweating after a workout, you should first shower and make sure to dry them thoroughly before putting your shoes on. Walking around with damp feet is a major culprit for athlete's foot. It is helpful to also dry your feet with the use of a blow dryer instead of towels. Dabbing some antiperspirant around the toes is also helpful, as it keeps them dry and clean. Instead of antifungal cream, it is also beneficial to use antifungal powder (since it is not moist). Wearing cotton socks and natural fiber footwear are also greatly helpful. Mild soaps should also be used when showering, instead of fragrant deodorant soaps.

Proper diet

    Proper diet is also helpful for reducing chances of getting athlete's foot, and also for getting rid of it if you already have the condition. Abstain from consuming foods with high levels of yeast, as well as baked products. Soda, sugar, alcohol and foods with grains also should be avoided, as should processed foods. A diet that is rich in leafy green vegetables and fresh fruit is beneficial for getting rid of athlete's foot. Raw garlic also has antifungal benefits and should be consumed when possible.
