Psoriasis Detox

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that shows up as scaly, dry red patches, most often on the scalp, ears and genitals. An auto-immune disorder, psoriasis is not contagious; unfortunately, it also is not curable. If you have this particular condition, however, you can try to minimize flare-ups. One of the ways to do so is to detoxify your system.

Detoxification Diet

Psoriasis often is associated with liver malfunction because the condition is linked to certain microbial byproducts in the blood, and these usually occur when the liver is overloaded with toxins. As a result, people with psoriasis can benefit from removing toxins from their liver in order to help clean and rebalance their system.

One way to cleanse the liver is through a detoxification diet. A naturopathic doctor can advise you about various detox diets available, but one of the basics of a detoxification diet is to drink lots of fresh water.

When you are not on a specific detox diet, you must eat a healthy, balanced diet in order to try to keep your psoriasis under control. Such a diet includes plenty of organic fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Herbal tea also is helpful in treating psoriasis. On the other hand, you should avoid caffeinated drinks, alcohol, fried foods, refined sugar, refined flour (white flour), unhealthy fats and spicy foods. In addition, people with psoriasis should stay away from shellfish, red meat and tropical fruits. People seeking to detoxify their livers can benefit from supplements that contain the vitamins A, D, E and K.

Herbal Supplements

Certain herbal supplements can improve your immune system and prevent the recurrence of psoriasis. Some used in tablets designed to treat psoriasis include Carthamus, Gardenia, Isatis Root, Lithospermum, Millettia, Moutan, Peony Red, Rehmannia Raw, Salvia, Smilax and Sophora (root). Other ingredients that are beneficial include betaine HCl, biotin, choline bitartrate, dandelion, dietary sulfur, inositol, garlic, globe artichoke, L-glutathione, N-acetyl-L-cysteine, L-methionine, milk thistle, niacin, parsley, riboflavin, selenomethionin, thiamine and turmeric.

Other Recommendations

Along with a healthy diet and beneficial supplements, homeopathy can be helpful in detoxifying for psoriasis. Another new-age method of detoxification is the hydra detox system. This machine reportedly allows its users to remove toxins through the soles of their feet.

Because stress can make psoriasis worse, you need to do what you can to reduce your stress levels. Getting plenty of sleep and doing deep-breathing exercises, yoga and meditation are all good ways to reduce stress. In addition, the American Liver Foundation recommends minimizing your exposure to items such as spray paint, insect sprays and other harmful chemicals that can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin because they pose a significant threat to the health of a liver.
