Fish Oil Effects on Hair

Fish Oil Effects on Hair

The benefits of fish and fish oil in our diets are widely accepted in traditional and alternative medicine. One of these benefits is healthier hair. With proper understanding and use, fish oil can aid in improving hair texture, volume and shine.

Features

The Omega 3 essential fatty acids found in fish oil improves hair health. DHA and EPA are the two main fatty acids found in fish oil.

Misconceptions

Purity and concentration of fish oil can vary significantly. Have your pharmacist or health food expert guide you toward a product that has the highest levels of DHA and EPA.

Considerations

Since it is believed that the Omega 3 works at the hair follicles, hair repeatedly damaged from certain medications, flat irons, curling irons and other treatments which strip away natural oils, will likely see minimal benefits from including fish oil unless the cause(s) of the damage are removed or significantly reduced.

Time Frame

Some may see clear improvement within weeks of taking fish oil supplements, while others may find it takes months.

Types

Eating grilled or broiled fish high in Omega 3, such as salmon or mackerel, two or three times weekly is excellent for hair, nails and overall health. Additionally, fish oil can be found in tablet, capsule and liquid form.
