How to Use Dandelion to Treat Urinary Tract Infections

How to Use Dandelion to Treat Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections are common among men and women, but women are affected most often. These infections are usually treated with antibiotics in Western medicine. Antibiotics, however, have their own side effects, including yeast infections. To treat urinary tract infections naturally, use dandelion in different preparations.

Instructions

    1

Track your symptoms. Urinary tract infections are characterized by a frequent need to urinate, painful urination, difficulty urinating and abdominal cramps. Blood and mucus present in your urine is also an indicator of a urinary tract infection.

    2

See a doctor to get a proper diagnosis. On rare occasions, the symptoms of a urinary tract infection can indicate a more serious problem. If you've had urinary tract infections before and recognize the symptoms, you can limit your doctor visits to particularly severe cases.

    3

Start drinking dandelion tea at the first sign of a urinary tract infection. You can make this tea from dried dandelions or buy it at most health food stores. Dandelion increases urine flow, and the tea preparation flushes the urinary system.

    4

Take dandelion capsules in conjunction with or in place of dandelion tea. You can still get the benefits of dandelion's anti-bacterial and diuretic properties, but you don't have to endure the bitter taste.

    5

Use a dandelion tincture in place of other dandelion treatments. Although available for sale at some health food stores, you can make your own tincture by putting thinly sliced dandelion roots in a jar, covering them with 100-proof vodka and storing them in a cool, dry place for 8 weeks. About 1 to 2 tsp. of the tonic should be taken each day, either all at once or divided in smaller doses.
