Home Remedies for Swollen Tonsils

The tonsils are located on the back sides of the throat. When these lymph nodes become inflamed, they may swell and cause pain and discomfort. This irritation typically leads to a common ailment known as tonsillitis. Learning some effective home remedies for swollen tonsils can help alleviate the discomfort. A doctor's care should be sought if a fever or the inability to swallow occurs with the swelling.

Humidifier

Using a humidifier in your bedroom at night can help relieve the pain of swollen tonsils. The machine lightly moistens the air, making it easier for you to breathe and swallow as the moisture coats the tonsils. Maintain the humidifier by changing the water each night and cleaning the entire machine every other night to prevent mold and bacteria growth.

Gargling

Gargling with saltwater every 2 to 3 hours can help reduce tonsil discomfort and swelling. Add 1/2 teaspoon of table salt to an 8-ounce glass of slightly warm water. Gargle a mouthful of the mixture for 5-10 seconds, then spit out. Repeat this at least five times every time you gargle for the saltwater to be helpful.

Rest Your Throat

Resting your throat can help alleviate the swelling and irritation. Avoid talking and eating solid foods as much as possible to reduce the discomfort associated with swollen tonsils. Continuing to talk when your tonsils are swollen can lead to laryngitis, a condition that affects the vocal cords and impairs your ability to speak. Reduce your eating to three times a day, and consume soups, broths, and other easy to swallow foods if possible.

Liquids

Drink plenty of liquids to ensure you stay hydrated and help your body fight the swelling and any infection that may be present. A minimum of eight glasses should be consumed. Water is the most recommended beverage during this time. Milk has also been known to help irritated tonsils.
