Home Remedy for Poor Vision

Identifying loss of vision in the early stages can be vital in preventing further and more serious vision loss. Common signs include difficulty reading small print or seeing distant objects, or a loss of night vision. Less obvious signs include bloodshot eyes, swelling around the eyes, sensitivity to light, a white spot in the eye or frequent migraines or headaches.

Vision loss can be the result of injury to the eyes, birth defects or illnesses; however, most people experience vision loss because of improper food habits and frequent straining of the eyes, through reading or using computers.

Diet Changes

    Vitamin A contains preformed retinoids and carotenoids, both of which promote healthy eyes and good vision. A well-rounded diet can improve poor vision dramatically.

    Preformed retinoids can be found in food sources such as the kidneys or liver of animals. They include beef, eggs and low-fat dairy products. Carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, can be found in orange or dark-colored fruits and vegetables. Choose blueberries, apricots, carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, mangoes, pumpkin, kale, cantaloupe, spinach and papaya.

Reduce Strain

    Strain can also cause vision to deteriorate, especially if your eyes are never given an opportunity to truly rest. Many people strain their eyes when reading, especially in dim areas, when watching television or when working on the computer for hours.

    Consider improving the light source for your reading. Dim light forces your eyes to strain; therefore, adding a light, even if it's a small book light, can provide relief.

    If you spend all day working at a computer, give your eyes a break every couple of hours. A small walk around the workspace will get you away from the screen and will help dramatically.

Eye Exercises

    Just as the muscles throughout your body need exercise, so do your eyes. Eye exercises can strengthen your eye muscles, improve your vision naturally and prevent deteriorating vision in the future.

    Using only your eyes--holding your head still--look up for a second, then down for a second. Close your eyes and allow them to relax. Repeat this exercise a few times a day to strengthen eye muscles and improve vision.
