Home Remedies for Hives Allergies

Hives are raised welts on the skin that are accompanied by swelling and itching. They are usually caused by an allergic reaction, which produces the inflammatory chemical histamine. Other possible causes are applied pressure to the skin, contact with cold air, water, or objects and overheating. For some people this can be a chronic and recurring condition. Herbal treatments are best used for more mild cases that do not respond to standard treatment and prevention. They are not appropriate for severe itching or swelling, and you should seek medical attention for a severe case.

Herbal Treatments

Alfalfa can prevent hives. It is a powerful blood cleanser and helps keep the skin free of toxins. Take the tablets as directed on the label. Aloe gel is well known for its skin soothing and infection fighting properties. Apply gel to the affected area and cover with a loose bandage or cloth. Black nightshade leaves soothe hives and ease inflammation. Wash and boil the leaves in water, put them on a cloth and cover the affected area. Stinging nettle leaf accelerates the healing of the rash. Take 1 tbsp. of extract three times a day.

Chinese Formulas

Chinese herbal formulas are used to treat hives and should be used as directed on the product label.

Four Substance Decoction is widely used to treat skin allergies and hives. It is especially helpful if pain or muscle tension is also present.
Ledebouriella Decoction that Sagely Unblocks is good for recurrent or persistent outbreaks. It is especially effective for people who have a tendency to be constipated, high blood pressure or are overweight. Do not use this formula if you are trying to conceive or are experiencing nausea or vomiting.

Other Suggestions

Do your best to avoid beans, eggs, meat, milk and nuts. They all contain substances that interact with the lining of the intestine and increase the amount of allergens absorbed. People with hives are much more sensitive to aspirin and it should be avoided. At the first sign of an outbreak, a cool shower can reduce the spread of the rash.
