Uses for Wild Raw Cherinol Chokecherry Extract

Cherinol is a brand name of chokecherry extract produced by the North American Herb and Spice Company in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. The chokecherry, Prunus virginiana, is indigenous to North America and grows throughout most of the continent. The fruit of this shrub is known to contain compounds that are beneficial in preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease through its ability to remove free radicals. However, consumption of raw, unripened chokecherries has been associated with poisoning.

Cherinol Chokecherry Extract

    According to the manufacturer of Cherinol, the North American Herb and Spice Company, the extract is made from "wild raw chokecherries handpicked from the remote regions of North America. These are wild forest cherries, which are extracted through cold processing." The purity of the product is maintained by eliminating heat, chemicals and solvents from the extraction process.

Key Source of Antioxidants

    Chokecherry extracts such as Cherinol are a source of antioxidants, which can benefit health by eliminating free radicals from the body. A study in the April 2009 issue of the Central European Journal of Biology compared the antioxidant capacity of several berry extracts, including chokecherry, to absorb oxygen radicals. The authors found that chokecherry had the highest antioxidant capacity as compared to all others tested, and concluded that the extract from this fruit would be appropriate as a dietary supplement.

Glucose Modification

    Metabolic syndrome is a complication of diabetes that results in hyperglycemia and vascular complications. A study published in the February 2008 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry investigated the potential of several berries, including chokecherry, to alleviate symptoms of diabetic disorders. The study concluded that chokecherry extract is rich in compounds that promote health and guard against diabetic complications.

Fighting Cardiovascular Disease

    Antioxidants play a role in preventing cancer and cardiovascular diseases by elimating free radicals from the body. A report appearing in the January 2008 issue of Nature compared the antioxidant capacities of six wild fruits from Manitoba, Canada. The researchers found that chokecherry extract had three to six times the antioxidant effects of all other samples tested. The study concluded that chokecherry is a valuable fruit for defense against cancer and cardiovascular disease.
