How to Use Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the administration of 100 percent oxygen given by inhalation inside an oxygen chamber with a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure. HBOT is capable of delivering oxygen to improve the circulation and revascularize damaged tissues and enhance their healing process. The use of HBOT is increasing as the public becomes aware of the body of research reporting its benefits in treating a variety of medical conditions. Some of these conditions are decompression sickness (also called the "bends"), chronic wounds, smoke inhalation, radiation necrosis, carbon monoxide poisoning and soft tissue infections.

Instructions

How to Use HBOT for a Condition

    1

Talk with your primary physician about your desire to use HBOT as a treatment for your condition and see if you will need a doctor's referral. If your physician agrees, discuss the advantages of HBOT and how the procedure will help you.

    2

Do your own research about the topic. Find out the location of an HBOT center near you (e.g., see Resources). Initiate contact and get more information about the topic.

    3

Ask your physician for a referral. She will also schedule an appointment for you.

    4

Register and change into a cotton hospital gown on arrival at the center. Remove all metal jewelry and place in a secure location.

    5

Enter the chamber, which may be a monoplace chamber for one person or a multiple-place chamber that can accommodate up to 12 patients simultaneously.

    6

Lie on the cot, as instructed. You will be assisted by medical personnel in making yourself comfortable. Relax and enjoy the treatment, which takes 75 to 90 minutes, depending on the condition being treated.
