Zinc and Psoriasis

Doctors and medical researchers aren't sure exactly what causes psoriasis, although it's agreed that psoriasis represents some form of immune deficiency. Currently, there is no known cure for psoriasis, which makes some alternative treatments worth a look, including zinc supplementation.

Significance

A study in the "Journal of Islamic Academy of Sciences" demonstrated that psoriasis lesions improved in individuals who were given supplementation to restore their blood levels of zinc to normal levels.

Zinc and Your Diet

Make sure to include good sources of zinc in your diet, including beef, pork and legumes. Take a zinc supplement if you have difficulty adding dietary sources of zinc.

Topical Zinc Products

Buy zinc cream at a natural-food store or vitamin shop. Also, try a diaper-rash cream in which the main, and sometimes only, ingredient listed on the label is zinc.

Where to Use Topical Zinc

Topical zinc application is a safe way to treat most psoriasis lesions. Topical zinc also can be used on scalp psoriasis, although it's best to use before bedtime because it can be very messy.

Warning

Use caution when treating open, pustular psoriasis lesions. Plaque psoriasis is the easiest type to treat with zinc cream.
