Home Remedies Made With Honey

Home Remedies Made With Honey

Honey is known as a natural sweetener in foods, but it also has healing properties. The name is derived from the Hebrew language and means "enchant." The term apitherapy means to treat with honey. Honey can revitalize energy and stamina and also strengthen immune systems.

Uses

According to the website Grandma's-Wisdom, this apple cider vinegar cocktail will help you lose weight; have healthy, shiny hair; manage psoriasis; aid in the relief of indigestion; help prevent gout; rid your body of liver toxins; restore your body's pH balance; energize you; give you a healthy-looking complexion and help with depression issues. (see reference 1)

To make this cocktail, mix together: 1 to 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar, 1 to 2 tsp. honey and 8 ounces of cold water. Start out by using only 1 tsp. each of the vinegar and honey, make sure your stomach has no digestive problems with it, and then increase to 2 teaspoons each. It is recommended you drink this cocktail 3 times a day for optimum health.

A thin coat of honey can be rubbed on the skin to disinfect and heal minor skin scrapes and abrasions; it draws excess water from the tissues, therefore reducing swelling. It is also useful for chapped lips

For a relaxing honey bath, put 2 oz. of honey in a glass with 5 drops of lavender essential oil. If the mixture is too thick, heat it by placing the glass in warm or hot water. Add 1 or 2 tbsp. of the honey-lavender mixture to your bathwater to help you with insomnia or simply to relax. Any leftover mixture can be stored in covered glass jar for later use.

Honey can be useful in treating hay fever. Honey contains some of the same pollen, and over time it may be beneficial in reducing hay fever symptoms. For best results, buy a honey that is grown locally.

For relief of coughs and wheezing, mix 1 tsp. of freshly chopped thyme with a little honey. Take by mouth to lessen cold symptoms. Mixing a little lemon juice with some honey and warming it slightly in the microwave is a very effective cough syrup that also helps with congestion.

Warning

According to the UAB Health website, honey should not be given to an infant younger than one year old. Honey contains spores that could cause severe illness in babies who are not old enough to digest it properly. No danger is found after the age of 1. (See reference 2)
