Home Remedies for Swelling & Redness

Swelling and redness often occurs with sprains, strains and overuse of muscles or other conditions such as allergies or insect bites. Numerous home remedies exist, however, be advised that swelling or redness that does not improve through home remedies or treatments should be discussed with a family medical provider.

RICE

    The RICE method for relief of swelling and accompanying redness stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. Give the injured area plenty of rest. Use ice packs to relieve swelling and follow with a compression bandage or wrap if possible, especially in the case of sprains to the ankle, wrist or shoulder. Then, elevate the affected area, which will reduce swelling caused by injury to tissues or broken blood vessels.

Antihistimines

    Sometimes, swelling and redness, especially in the nasal passages, is caused by allergies. In such cases, an antihistamine may help reduce symptoms and provide much needed relief. Antihistamines should contain diphenhydramine or chlorpheniramine maleate for optimal benefit.

    Antihistamines can also treat insect bites, which may cause the skin to swell and engorge with blood, giving the skin a red appearance.

Baking Soda Poultice

    For swelling and redness caused by spider or insect bites, mix a baking soda poultice made of three parts baking soda to one part water. Spread the poultice over the affected area.
