The Advantages of Castor Oil

The Advantages of Castor Oil

Castor oil is extracted from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant. Also known as Castor bean, Castor, Mexican seed, palma christi, mole plant and oil plant, Castor oil is used both internally and topically. The use of Castor oil for medical purposes was first recorded by the ancient Egyptians. Many cultures have since used Castor oil and it was reportedly used during the early Middle Ages in Europe. Most plants used today to produce Castor oil are grown in Brazil and India.

Mainstream Medicine

In mainstream medicine, Castor oil is used as a vehicle to deliver some chemotherapy drugs to cancerous tumors, according to the American Cancer Society. Oncologists use a special formula known as Cremophor EL as a carrier for the drug known as paclitaxel. Paclitaxel is used to treat tumors including metatastic breast cancer.

Stimulant Laxative

Castor oil is used as a stimulant laxative for relief due to occasional constipation. As a stimulant laxative, Castor oil treats constipation that occurs after prolonged hospitalization, bed rest or neurological constipation. Additionally, Castor oil is used as a laxative for colonic evacuation. Taken orally, the oil empties the bowels prior to surgery or other medical procedures where thorough evacuation is necessary.

Topical Uses

Castor oil packs are used as a traditional holistic treatment for a variety of topical conditions. The pack is placed on the skin to improve circulation and to promote the healing of the organs and tissues beneath the skin. Castor oil packs treat poor elimination, liver conditions, inflammation of the joints, colon impaction, colitis, toxemia and neuritis.

Internal Uses

In traditional medicine, Castor oil is taken internally to alleviate menstrual disorders. Castor oil has an ample supply of ricinoleic acid and regular consumption helps with delayed or an achy menstruation. Regular consumption of Castor oil is also used for its anti-inflammatory properties. The oil eliminates inflammation in the liver, kidney, colon, urinary tract and the respiratory tract. According to the Natural Home Remedies website, research done by dietitians showed that Castor oil improves the healing process in the case of viral fever. Therapeutic properties improve the digestive system which, in turn, improves the function of the body's defenses.

Hair Care

Castor oil is used for hair care to heal the scalp from conditions caused by fungi. Additionally, Castor oil helps treat dandruff and eliminates dry hair and scalp conditions.

Safety

In proper doses, Castor oil is considered as safe as a laxative, according to the American Cancer Society. Long term use, however, may cause side effects such as cramping, nausea and vomiting. Long term use can also cause electrolyte and fluid loss. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use Castor oil. Your health-care provider can recommend what dosage is best for your needs.
