How to Fill Gelatin Capsules

How to Fill Gelatin Capsules

As alternative medicine becomes more prominent as a way to treat and prevent disease, filling gelatin capsules with a personalized blend of herbs, vitamins or amino acids is becoming more commonplace. A gelatin capsule is composed of a base end, which acts as a receptacle for the substance to be held, and a cap end, which fits tightly over the base. There are a variety of gelatin capsules available on the market. For example, some capsules have a locking cap end to ensure there is no leakage of the contents, whereas other types come in a variety of colors to make identification easier. Filling gelatin capsules by hand ensures quality and consistency in a supplement.

Instructions

    1

Spray a large flat surface with the bleach-based spray cleaner and wipe it thoroughly with a paper towel. This surface will need to be wiped down each time a new supplement is used. Unintentionally mixing supplements can be dangerous. After spraying, close any accessible windows or doors; this will keep out any breezes and ensure that the conditions are mostly sterile.

    2

Put on the medical gloves. Using the scale, measure how much supplement will be used. It is important to be sure that the first capsules filled are precise to dosage specifications. After filling a few capsules, it is possible to approximate the amount of product that each capsule should contain. If there is any doubt as to whether the dosage is correct, be sure to double check the measurements. To determine dosage, speak to a doctor or alternative medicine practitioner.

    3

Scoop of the supplemental product, either off the scale or off the table, into the longer, base end of the gelatin capsule. With the other hand, use the cap end to scoop the rest of the product. Bring both ends of the capsule together.

    4

Apply gentle pressure to both sides of the capsule to seal it. If using empty capsules with an added locking mechanism, make sure that it is engaged. Lay the capsule down and begin the next one.

    5

Store filled capsules in a cool, dry location. Determine the shelf-life of the supplemental product used. Sometimes, using loose powder to fill gelatin capsules reduces the time it will remain biologically effective. Store the capsules in a sealable bag or pill bottle.
