How to Use Flaxseed Oil to Treat Irritable Bowel

How to Use Flaxseed Oil to Treat Irritable Bowel

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal ailment that presents itself through a variety of symptoms. Some people who have an irritable bowel experience gas, bloating and diarrhea, while others may have constipation and cramping as their main symptoms. Flaxseed oil and ground flaxseed can be a natural way to treat an irritable bowel. The antioxidant properties of the oil and the fiber content of the ground flaxseed can keep the colon healthy and less susceptible to irritation.

Instructions

    1

Discuss your irritable bowel syndrome with your doctor. He will tell you if he thinks it is appropriate for you to use flaxseed oil to treat your symptoms. Be sure to let him know about any other medicines you may use for other problems.

    2

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep stools soft if constipation is your main IBS symptom. Add 1 to 3 tbsp. of flaxseed oil to a large glass of water once a day, or mix it with juice if you prefer.

    3

Eat a diet that includes whole grains and other foods high in fiber as an easy way to treat IBS. Sprinkle ground flaxseed over oatmeal or leafy greens for a double dose of this important nutrient. A high-fiber diet can also lower your cholesterol and reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke.

    4

Reduce the amount of stress in your life. Irritable bowel syndrome can be worsened by stress and anxiety. Flaxseed oil may be able to assist you, as it can help adjust hormone levels, but you may need to explore other options as well.

    5

Give flaxseed some time to work. Taking a dose of oil may be able to relieve constipation to some extent within the hour but may not eliminate other IBS symptoms as quickly.
