How to Use Flaxseed Oil for Arthritis Symptoms

People who have arthritis--its main symptoms being stiff and achy joints--know that unfortunately there is no cure for their painful disease. Some arthritis patients opt to use FDA-approved medications to ease their pain. Those who want a more natural approach to lessen arthritis pain can use flaxseed oil. The oil is laden with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is similar in composition to the omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation and decrease the risk of heart disease.

    Purchase flaxseed oil packaged in a dark or otherwise opaque bottle. Light and heat can cause the components of the oil to break down and become less effective. For this reason, avoid frying or baking with flaxseed oil.

    Store flaxseed oil in the refrigerator. Pay close attention to the expiration date to avoid spoilage. Discard the oil if it starts to smell bad.

    Stir flaxseed oil into a tall glass of juice with your breakfast. In addition to helping your arthritic joints, the oil can help regulate your digestive system for the day.

    Add flaxseed oil to 1/4 to 1/2 cup of lowfat cottage cheese. The fats present in the oil are better absorbed by your body when they bind to proteins. The nutty flavor of flaxseed oil is complemented by the cheese flavor to make a healthy side dish.

    Substitute a flaxseed oil-based salad dressing for your regular dressing. Wisk together 1/2 cup of flaxseed oil with 1/2 cup of olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate leftover dressing for the next day.

    Ease your symptoms of arthritis by using a warm flaxseed compress. Use flaxseed flour and hot water to make a paste. Apply to the affected areas with a warm washcloth, avoiding contact with any open cuts or sores.
