How to Use Flaxseed Oil to Treat High Cholesterol

How to Use Flaxseed Oil to Treat High Cholesterol

Having high levels of cholesterol in your blood can increase your risk for heart attack or stroke. The first way to treat high cholesterol is through healthy eating and regular exercise. Adding flaxseed or flaxseed oil, rich in healthy omega-3 fatty acids, to your diet can be an effective way to lower dangerously high cholesterol levels.

Instructions

    1

Buy a small bottle of flaxseed oil as your first purchase of the supplement. Determine how much you use in 1 to 2 weeks and replenish it as needed. Flaxseed oil becomes rancid very quickly.

    2

Keep the flaxseed oil in an opaque container in the refrigerator to prevent it from spoiling. Light causes the oil to break down and become less effective. Throw the oil away if you notice it has a strong, unpleasant odor.

    3

Use 1 tbsp. of flaxseed oil each day to treat high cholesterol symptoms. Mix the oil with a large glass of juice or combine it with a portion of cottage cheese. The protein in the cottage cheese binds to the oil and makes it easier for your body to absorb.

    4

Enjoy a salad dressing made with flaxseed oil for a tasty way to treat cholesterol problems. Use equal parts of flaxseed and olive oils, add mustard and some freshly squeezed lemon juice. Shake well and dress your greens for a healthy addition to your meal.

    5

Grind whole flaxseeds in a coffee grinder and add the contents to bread dough, breakfast cereal or yogurt. Flaxseed in this form provides high concentrations of essential fiber to your diet, as well as providing cholesterol-lowering properties. Store unused ground flaxseeds in the refrigerator or freezer.

    6

Exercise several times each week to help lower your cholesterol. Flaxseed oil may help lower your numbers but will not do it alone. Cardiovascular exercise can improve your cholesterol and overall health.

    7

Eat fatty foods sparingly when using flaxseed oil. One tbsp. of flaxseed oil can contain up to 130 calories. Reducing the amount of fat in your diet is a good way to help lower high cholesterol levels.
