How to Bathe the Eye

The eyes are sensitive organs in the body which can get overworked or infected. Throughout time, eye washing and bathing has been practiced to soothe dry and irritated eyes, as well as to remove foreign objects that accidentally got stuck inside the eyelids. There are three ways to bathe the eye.

Instructions

Wash Bowl

    1

Fill an ordinary wash bowl with water, about three-fourths full. Do not fill the water to the brim to avoid spilling. Ordinary cold water can be used to wash the debris out of the eye, but in some instances such as mild eye irritation, lukewarm water mixed with a teaspoon of salt or boric acid may be used to provide instant relief.

    2

Remove eyeglasses or contact lenses if you are wearing them

    3

Hold your breath and immerse your face in the water. Slowly open your eyes to allow contact of eyeballs with the water or the solution. Blink your eyelids and roll your eyeballs to let go of any harmful particles that entered the eye. Do this for at least 10 seconds. Repeat until your eye discomfort is relieved.

Eye Cup

    4

Fill an eye cup with water or a weak solution of salt or boric acid. You can also buy commercial eye wash solution which you can fill in the cup. An eye cup is a small cup with a contoured rim that fits the socket of the eye, used for application of liquid medicine or wash to the eye. This method is ideally used when a person has conjunctivitis. It allows washing one eye one at a time, discouraging the spread of infection to the other eye.

    5

Remove eyeglasses or contact lenses if you are wearing them.

    6

Lean your head forward and place the cup over one eye. Press the cup firmly against the eye socket so the liquid won't leak.

    7

Tilt your head backward to let the solution soak your eye.

    8

Open and blink your eye, then roll your eyeball to allow the eye wash to cleanse it.

    9

Discard the liquid, wash the eye cup and put a new solution into it. Repeat steps 3 to 5 to bathe the other eye.

Commercial Eye Wash and Bath Kit

    10

Pour the eye wash into the eye bath about one-third full.

    11

Remove eyeglasses or contact lenses if you are wearing them.

    12

Bend your head forward while holding the eye bath by its base. Place the eye bath over the eye and raise your head. Open your eye to allow the eye wash to bateh your eyeball. Turn your head left and right for at least 30 seconds. Rinse eye bath thoroughly after use.

    13

Repeat step 4 to wash the other eye.
